November Board Report

News/Info

The Women's Commission has submitted budget requests to the board, and we are looking forward to planning some new activities for 2005. We had a very strong year of camps & clinics in 2004, and will be able to award additional grants for 2005. We had a large number of volunteers join the commission throughout the year and plan to harness their energy to expand our outreach.

Here are the committee and region updates for Nov 2004:

We are planning some new ideas for 2005 and have submitted budget requests to the board.  We have found that handing out information at the pre-race expos isn't as effective as we'd like, so we plan to shift our emphasis to post-race events. First, we would like to have a Women's Commission banner and/or tent that we can try and get set up after the race for the regional reps. Also, we would like to do a post-event mailing to participants to encourage them to continue in the sport. We feel this would have more impact on the target audience and would help drive USAT membership.

CAMPS AND CLINICS
Submitted by Peggy Donovan:
My clinic won't be starting up again until the spring, but all the sponsors are coming back and it looks as if we're in business at least one more year.

The first annual Luna Bar Women's Triathlon held October 3rd south of Sacramento in the beautiful Rancho Seco Recreational Park and put on by TBFRacing attracted 201 women and a great number of spectators.  For 2005 the event is scheduled for Oct. 2nd. (www.tbfracing.com).

In the spring of 2005 the Women's Triathlon Club in Chico, CA, is planning on hosting two spring Women's Mini Training Camps.

Camp 1 is scheduled for Friday to Sunday, February the 4-6th.  The purpose is to jump-start the spring training with swim, bike and run sessions focusing on base training, training strategies, and basic drills.  The centerpiece of the training will be the "Paskenta Century" which attracts 150-200 riders for the flat 50, 75, and 100-mile options (free and unsupported).

Camp 2 is scheduled for Friday to Sunday, April the 22-24th. The focus will be on training intensity and how to take a more aggressive approach to both training and racing. The centerpiece of the camp is the "Wildflower Century," which attracts 3,500-4,000 riders from all over the country for the 20- to 100-mile flat and/or hilly options (a fee and supported).

Although the target audience is the experienced athlete, anybody is welcome to attend.  The fee is projected to be around $75.00 (we keep things simple) and home-stays for those interested will most likely be available.

SPECIAL EVENTS (Submitted by: Jean McGuire)
The Women's Breakfast at Nationals was a big success! There were 54 women in attendance this year. This is down slightly from last
year, but I think the format of this years breakfast was enough of a success that we should have a better attendance next year. Each woman introduced the woman to their right and told a non-triathlon related story about her. This not only encouraged more talking at the individual tables, but it also led to a lot of talking and networking at the end of the breakfast. We actually had trouble clearing the room because of all the women who stayed to talk to each other. The good news is that the breakfast was once again self-supporting. We were able to have a nice breakfast without the WC having to pay for any of the event. We're already talking about things we can do for next years breakfast that I'm really excited about.

The articles and website committee is working on expanding the articles posted and also incorporating calendar functions. We moved to our own domain this year (www.usatwomen.com) and plan to continue hosting our own domain for 2005.

The season is winding down, and a few races races were cancelled or postponed due to the hurricanes. Now that the hurricanes and elections are over I plan to make a renewed effort on getting much more information on our website, especially articles from members.
