Women's Commission Going Strong by Denise Dillon

News/Info

We've all noticed it. The face of the athletes at triathlons is changing. The women have noticed it because there's more competition. The guys... well, of course you've noticed! More and more women are getting involved in multisport events. The USAT Women's Commission deserves much of the credit for this.

Since its inception the Women's Commission has encouraged women to compete. The Commission supports a network of women across the U.S. who contribute to the advancement of women in our sport. A few months ago the Commission called for
volunteers to help out in various areas. Dozens of very enthusiastic and dedicated women stepped up to the plate and already great strides have been made.

Camps & Clinics
You may see a women’s only clinic in your city soon, thanks to the efforts of those involved in the camps and clinics committee. This is basically a support group for people putting on clinics. Already a number of women have set dates for clinics and camps across the country.

Membership & Danskin
The Women's Commission wants to expand the female USAT membership. To do this, the membership committee is holding discussions at various camps about the benefits of USAT. There will also be a presence at the Danskin series races to encourage membership in USAT. Other women are giving lectures about women in our sport and the advantages of being a member of USAT.

Nationals Breakfast
A committee is being formed to organize the Women's breakfast to be held at the USAT age group National Championships. It will also help host a gathering at Worlds.

Articles & Website
The website has taken on a new look and is filled with valuable information. There's also a special section for women triathletes to share their stories about the latest races, training programs and personal experiences. Check it out at http://www.smfsport.com/usatwomen

This is just a sample of the major plans the Women's Commission has for the coming year. If you'd like to get involved, contact Sherri Wattenbarger at Sherri.Wattenbarger@usdoj.gov or Ashley Rosilier at ashley@rungearrun.com
