The Judy Flannery Memorial Fund, honoring the unequaled Grand Masters multi sport athlete killed in 1997 in a tragic bike accident, will be co-chaired this year by two of Judy's closest friends: Robert Vigorito and Celeste Callahan. Vigorito, from Columbia, Maryland is a Race Director/Producer and USATMA Regional President. Callahan, Denver, is a co-founder of the Fund, a member of the USAT Women's Commission, and founder, as per one of Judy's last requests of her, of Team CWW, the largest grassroots novice triathlon training program in the country. Together they will assure that JFMF continues Judy's legacy on helping and encouraging women in the multi-sport arena. Two projects make up the Fund's mission. The first is the annual awarding of The Judy Flannery Memorial Scholarship to a female masters triathlete or duathlete who has qualified to participate in her sport's world championship but has not the means to attend and compete. For the 2003 season, awards will be funded for the national and world championships in both sports. Applications, with three letters of recommendation and race resume, should detail need. They may be sent to : Celeste Callahan, 190 High Street, Denver, CO 80218. All applications are due: for duathlon nationals, by May 1; for duathlon worlds, by July 1; for triathlon nationals by September 1; for triathlon worlds by October 1. The second mission of the Fund is the presentation of the Spirit of Judy Flannery Award at the Women's Masters Breakfast at The National Triathlon Age Group Championships, this year in Shreveport, Louisiana in October. Nominations for this award are now open and letters of recommendation should be sent again to Celeste Callahan. Nominees should best represent those special qualities of Judy Flannery, among them: excellence in multi-sport, high moral character, and a demonstration of "giving back" to the sport. The Judy Flannery Memorial Fund accepts donations and contributions from the multi-sport community.
