USAT WOMEN'S COMMISSION REPORT: March 5, 2002

News/Info

It is a quiet time of year, but Sherri Wattenbarger and Susanna Gaunt met (over the phone) to update the state of the Women's Commission in 2002. The main focus for the year is to promote women's only clinics throughout the country. These clinics bring new triathletes to the sport, as well as encourage women of all ages to try a new hobby. In addition, each of these participants will potentially become USAT members. To help do this, the Women's Commission is offering four one-time grants of $200 each to provide seed money for facility rental, USAT sanctioning fees, and other start-up costs. These grants are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis and require the clinic's director to provide an agenda, a budget, the projected target market, and the projected impact on the community. Our first recipient is Lisa Lynam who is putting on a swimming-focused clinic for women in the Austin area. We already know of other women's clinics that have happened or are taking place in 2002, many of which are put on by Women's Commission volunteers. Sherri put on a successful women's only clinic in Kansas City this past weekend. Below is a list of upcoming clinics that are posted on our website as well as a list of women's only races. (For more details on these clinics, please contact me or our website)

The Women's Commission is up to date with articles for the next issue of Triathlon Times and will have a new article for the summer edition. We will organize an All Women's Breakfast again in Coeur D'Alene during the weekend of the Age Group Championship. We will not be showing Judy's Time again, but are interested in researching a speaker(s) for the breakfast.

We have requested Valerie Gattis to be our liaison with the board.

Other things in the works:

  • Helping to get the Nike Women's Triathlon Series to be sanctioned by USAT
  • Getting representatives to staff Women's Commission booths at women's only triathlons
  • Currently we are putting out a request for volunteers that are going to these races, or live nearby and then checking on costs to see if this will fit into our budget
