COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 20, 2003) - The USA Triathlon Board of Directors voted Valerie Ellsworth-Gattis of Louisville, Ky., as its first woman president at its meeting on Feb. 7-8.

Gattis takes over for Ray Plotecia (Towson, Md.), who served as president for one year. She was elected to the Board in 2002 as the Central Region representative.

Jim Girand (Palo Alto, Calif.), a Western Region representative, was elected vice president. Eastern Region representative Diane Travis (Clermont, Fla.) will continue as treasurer and at-large representative Karen Buxton (Greensboro, N.C.) will continue as secretary.

Gattis has been working diligently as a member, then a chairperson of various USA Triathlon commissions since 1996. She started on the Women's Commission with the late Judy Flannery. Gattis is also the U.S. representative to the International Triathlon Union Women's Committee and has coordinated Project Tri-Spirit, which gets new and gently used triathlon equipment to international athletes who cannot afford such equipment.

Gattis has been a member of Team USA and has competed in both triathlon and duathlon.

After the election, Gattis said the Board would be paying particular attention to the issues of race directors and regional federations this year.
